Melancholy Invention

Melancholy Invention is a poignant piano composition by Richard J Chandler. Our sample is a setting of the invention for 2 bassoons.

The piece holds a special significance as it was written with his dear friend Ed Turley in mind, with the intention that Dr. Turley would perform it.

A Twist of Fate

Richard Chandler reminisced about the time he spent with Ed Turley just days before his passing. They had the opportunity to go through the piece together, and Turley's interest in Melancholy Invention was unexpected as he devoted 45 minutes to reading through it. Little did Chandler know that this encounter would take on a deeper meaning after Turley's untimely death just four days later. The composition captures a bittersweet essence.

Composer's Reflection

Despite Turley's relatively stable health at the time, fate had other plans. For me, Melancholy Invention expresses complex emotions. It serves as a reminder of the deep connections we forge through music and the arts and the lasting friendships imbued within musical compositions.
